History

Apiturismo (bee tourism) Sinanché was founded in 2012, because of their need of a bigger commercial and legal strength. The project developed gradually until consolidating as a cooperative in 2014. The first financial support came from the Tourism Secretariat of Mexico, with whom a business plan was arranged. The Commission for the Development of Indigenous Peoples (CDI) accepted this plan and agreed to fund it in several stages, in which palapas, meliponaries (beehives for Melipona-bees) as well as other areas were built.

The cooperative joined Co’ox Mayab in 2016 through contact with them due to their closeness to the Ejido San Crisanto.

About the place

The cooperative is dedicated to bee-tourism and introduces the visitors to the production of honey, they’ll show you the different species that can be found in the region: the apis mellifera and the melipona beechei, recognized by its lack of stinger and the healing properties of its honey. You’ll also learn about the production process of both species and the artisanal making of products like wax, jelly and candles.

It also emphasizes the importance of the protection and conservation of the species, due to the environmental services they provide as main pollinators of the regional flora.
