The project began in 2003 with an invitation from the National Commission for the Development of Indigenous Peoples (CDI) to start an ecotouristic project around the cenote. The project was approved and in 2004 the operative process began. However, over time the lack of visitors caused the desertion of more than half of the members, who were discouraged as the expected results were not met.

In 2006 the cooperative X-Canché was constituted by 10 members of the community of Hunukú. They have since then obtained financial support to improve the project. Currently the cooperative is formed by people of Mayan origin who have reached a high level of professionalism and customer service quality.

About the location

The cenote X’Canché is located 3 km from the town of Ek Balam and a few steps from the archaeological site, in the middle of the jungle. It is a beautiful semi-open cenote, reachable from the site’s entrance thanks to a 1.5 km long track on foot or by bike or “tricicleta”, a bicycle for 2 people.
