Overview
Discover the fascinating Maya culture and history on this tour from Merida. Begin with a 6:30 AM pick-up and travel to Ek Balam, a village where Maya is the most widely spoken language. Enjoy a delicious breakfast to fortify yourself, before embarking on a bike ride to explore local agricultural practices.
Visit a milpa, a Mesoamerican farming system, accompanied by a local guide. Taste traditional pozole and sweets made from regional crops, while learning about the ways and types of farming. Enter the k’áax, or jungle, to learn about the traditional knowledge of medicinal plants and trees used in the construction of houses.
Afterwards, begin a 2-kilometer journey by bicycle or tricycle-taxi (tuk-tuk) through the jungle to reach Cenote X’Canché. Refresh yourself in its waters and appreciate the biodiversity around the crystal-clear cenote. Before leaving, enjoy a traditional Yucatecan lunch at the cooperative’s restaurant.
The last stop of the tour is at the archaeological site of Ek Balam, famous for its impressive Mayan architecture and its importance in pre-Hispanic times. Admire the incredible views from the top of the pyramids. Return to Merida, where you will be dropped off at approximately 7 PM.
