Where the World Ends: Community Tour of San Agustin and Loltun Caves

On our ”Where the World Ends” tour you can explore the remote community of San Agustin on foot with a local guide to learn about their productive activities and way of life. Afterwards, you can enter the “underworld” at the Loltun Caves.

Overview

Early in the morning you will head south to the heart of the Puuc zone. Upon arrival you will enjoy a delicious breakfast at the facilities of the cooperative Turismo Indígena San Agustín.

During your stay you will enjoy the tranquility of the community and observe some of the economic activities that take place in the village, such as the production of charcoal and wooden furniture, the manufacture of carved wooden handicrafts and hammocks, as well as the cultivation of vegetables and medicinal plants in a small local plot, and then taste a delicious traditional lunch at the cooperative’s restaurant.

To continue with the tour, you will visit the archaeological site of Loltun, impressive caves located 60 meters deep. During the 1,000-meter tour you will observe paintings on the walls and other objects that tell the history of the Yucatan Peninsula. After the visit you will return to Merida, arriving around 6:30 p.m.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

There is no telephone coverage in the area.
This tour is not recommended for people with reduced mobility and/or claustrophobia.

CANCELLATION POLICY:

We will charge a 50% cancellation fee if you cancel your reservation 2 days or more before the start of the event.

Departure from Mérida
Early in the morning you will depart south to the heart of the Puuc zone.

Arrival in San Agustin and breakfast
Upon arrival you will enjoy a delicious breakfast in the facilities of the cooperative Turismo Indígena San Agustín.

Community tour

Lunch at the cooperative's restaurant
To recharge your batteries, you will enjoy a delicious traditional lunch at the cooperative's restaurant.

Visit to the Loltun Caves
To continue with the tour, you will visit the archaeological site of Loltun, an impressive grotto located at a depth of 60 meters. During the 1,000-meter tour you will see paintings on the walls and other objects that tell the history of the Yucatan Peninsula.

Arrival in Merida
After the tour you will return to Merida, arriving at around 6:30 p.m.

  • The guided tour in Loltun is not included (a guided tour inside the caves is mandatory, which can be shared with other visitors and contribute with a tip).
