Co’ox Mayab Organizes Birdwatching Techniques Course for its Partners @ Ek Balam

Continuing with our commitment to build a responsible, solidary, fair and conscious tourism in Yucatan, Co’ox Mayab organized the “Birdwatching Revalidation Course for Guides Certified by the NOM-09-TUR-2002″, one of the norms that regulate the activity of tourist guides in Mexico. The course was held from Tuesday 13 to Friday 16 November at the facilities of the U Najil Ek Balam Cooperative, located in the Municipality of Temozón. This event is possible thanks to funding from the German foundation viSozial.
Mr. Enrique Domínguez León, Director of Infrastructure and Tourist Products of Yucatan’s Secretariat of Tourist Promotion; Mr. Santiago Cupul, Nature Tourism Coordinator of the same institution; Ms. Elda Moreno Acevedo, coordinator of the Tourism bachelor’s degree of the Autonomous University of Yucatán; Mr. Miguel Nahuat Tun, Deputy Director of Promotion and Tourist Entailment of the Municipality of Valladolid; and the president of Co’ox Mayab Mr. Mario Tuz May attended the course’s inauguration.

The objective is to strengthen the skills of the nature guides of the different social enterprises that are part of Co’ox Mayab, while contributing to the appreciation of the various bird species in the region, as well as to the conservation of their habitat through responsible and sustainable tourism.

The course was taught by the Latin American Education and Training Center for guides in Tourism, better known as CENLATUR, and was instructed by Samuel Juárez Lucero, specialist in Night Sky observation, from Mexico City, and Ismael Arellano Ciau, specialist in birdwatching, from the community of Xocén. Co’ox Mayab continues with the constant training of social enterprises dedicated to alternative community-based tourism, to promote sustainability in tourism practices and local development in the state of Yucatan.
